Decorating a small bedroom can be tricky, but there are plenty of tips and tricks to make it feel cozy and functional! I’ve dealt with small, even awkward, bedrooms in both my current and previous homes. Honestly, I enjoy the challenge, and over time, I’ve built up a little bag of tricks. So, I’m sharing all my favorite small bedroom decor ideas that you can easily use in your own space.
First off, let me just say that small can be amazing! (And no, I’m not just saying this because I’m 5’2″…) With a few smart tricks, a small room can feel cozy and spacious.
Both of these primary bedrooms might be called “small” by real estate standards, but I think they’re functional and inviting!
1. Choose a Focal Point
Choose a focal point, such as a bold headboard or a piece of artwork, that can draw the eye and make the room feel more dynamic.
In both bedrooms, I used the headboard area as a focal point. One was a wood board attached to the wall, and the other was a painted black half wall.
You could also use artwork, a light fixture, or curtains as a focal point.
PS. I LOVE this memory foam mattress – it arrived in a box and was so easy to set up!
2. Opt for Streamlined Furniture
Small spaces are not for oversized accent chairs, massive dressers, or sleigh beds. They are perfect for minimal and streamlined furniture.
Look for pieces with unfussy design and minimal details. For this reason, I chose a matte black simple bed frame.
3. Add Visual Height
Get things off the floor and up high! This creates more space and moves your eyes around the room, making it feel more spacious.
For example, I chose a leaning ladder to hold extra blankets. Instead of a floor lamp, I opted for a hanging pendant light. The wall shelf adds more height and makes it easy to change out artwork.
I love these simple fabric under-the-bed storage boxes for more space!
4. Get Clever with Storage
In a small bedroom, storage is key. Consider using under-bed storage containers, hanging shelves, or wall-mounted units to maximize space.

5. Re-imagine Every Corner
One thing about small spaces is that you don’t have an inch to waste. I like to think of alternative ways a corner or a nook might be used.
I created a Corner Office Nook in my current home and a writing space in my previous home. Both made great use of the space.
6. Choose Multi-Functional Furniture
When choosing furniture for small bedroom decor, think about how it might be used in different ways. This helps keep things simple.
For example, I often use a stool as a side table, plant stand, or extra seating. This writing area can also function as a vanity by replacing the artwork with a mirror.
7. Keep Decor Minimal
Minimal is my game. But we all need a good reminder that clutter can make a small bedroom feel even smaller.
I like to remove all the decor from a space and then put back only what I need and love.
8. Choose Furniture Proportionate to Space
Resist the urge to cram furniture into a space. Small or awkward spaces mean choosing furniture that fits the space.
For example, I chose a dresser from Craigslist, painted it with black milk paint, and maximized this nook.
Understanding the exact size of the bed can help determine the layout and even what size rug is needed. Check out my rug guide for sizing and favorite Geometric Area Rugs for ideas.

9. Add Texture
Texture adds visual interest and makes a room feel cozy. We’re avoiding the cramped, cold cell feeling, right?
Adding a textured rug, linens, throw pillows, wall art, baskets, and curtains are all ways to add texture.
10. Layer Lighting
Lighting can make all the difference. Use a mix of overhead lighting, task lighting, and ambient lighting for a layered look.
Avoid Cool White Light bulbs – they can make the space feel stark and harsh.
